Without Asking

Whoever wants to witness God’s bounty without asking for it should look at Pakistan’s recent history. Those who held the keys to power in the beloved homeland did not want Hafiz Syed Asim Munir to become the Army Chief, yet it was God’s will that he was appointed to the position.

Likewise, the rulers of the time initiated a presidential reference to remove Qazi Faez Isa, but God’s decision was that this man would become the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The Creator of the universe shaped events such that Qazi Faez Isa, son of Quaid-e-Azam’s companion Qazi Isa, rose to sit on the Chief Justice’s chair. He served as Chief Justice of Pakistan for nearly thirteen months. The authorities requested him to extend his tenure, but he declined, and now he is returning home with dignity and honor. During this period, a new law was passed in Parliament, giving Parliament the power to appoint the Chief Justice.

The message conveyed was that only the legislative body has supreme authority to make laws through mutual consultation, not anyone else. The Creator, who shapes the passage of time, has once again woven events such that Parliament, resembling a fierce tiger, emerged as a parliamentary committee nominated the senior judge of the Supreme Court, Mr. Justice Yahya Afridi, as the next Chief Justice of Pakistan. Perhaps Justice Yahya Afridi had not anticipated or desired to participate in this race, as there was no indication of such an ambition in his words or actions. This is truly a sight of God’s blessings given without asking.

On the Country’s Chief Executive

Speaking of the country’s Chief Executive, the world was saying a year ago that Mian Nawaz Sharif would be the next Prime Minister. The flow of events indicated the same, but then the course changed, and Shahbaz Sharif became the Prime Minister.

No one could have imagined that the Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s summit would be hosted in Pakistan. This happened, bringing the Russian and Chinese Prime Ministers here, along with India’s Foreign Minister, Mr. Jaishankar. During this period, Pakistan achieved something remarkable: it upheld its moral image, treating Jaishankar with the utmost respect, despite the manner he had treated Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, pulling his hand back instead of shaking hands. Pakistan hosted Jaishankar with full courtesy, and Jaishankar reciprocated with respectful conversation and a positive tweet, signaling a commitment to being good neighbors. This has elevated Pakistan’s dignity, setting it on a path toward stability. Political stability will bring economic stability, and when merit and justice are upheld by the administration and judiciary, we will leap forward, God willing!

On Criminal Cases

I have repeatedly written in these pages of Roznama Dunya and mentioned in speeches that the maximum duration for criminal case decisions should be set at six months, and civil cases at a maximum of one year. If this is implemented with justice as the priority, our society will become peaceful. If tax collection is streamlined through a single-window system, our industry will flourish. Traders are willing to pay taxes, but it is the corruption within the system that poses a real obstacle. If each department makes merit and justice mandatory and honest officers are appointed as heads, the country will surge forward. Now, every department needs to start implementing reforms. Europe adopted the reforms of Hazrat Umar Farooq (RA), and over the past few centuries, they have advanced significantly.

Reflecting on History

When Jerusalem was under siege, the political and religious leader, Patriarch Sophronius, said, “If your leader comes here, we will place the keys in his hands.” This was the justice of Hazrat Umar (RA) that the world had witnessed in conquered lands. Sophronius, too, had seen it, which is why he made the offer. Hazrat Umar (RA) appointed Hazrat Ali Al-Murtaza (RA) as his deputy and personally headed towards Jerusalem. Sophronius greeted him, profoundly moved by his simplicity, and placed the city keys in Hazrat Umar’s hands. Hazrat Umar (RA) stayed there for ten days, honoring Sophronius by keeping him by his side at every event. When Muslims and Christians were seated together after Fajr prayers in the Temple Mount, which the Holy Quran refers to as “Al-Aqsa Mosque,” Sophronius’s eyes filled with tears. Hazrat Umar (RA), seeing his grief, assured him, “Do not worry, be strong. This world is a place where days are constantly in rotation; sometimes they favor you, sometimes they oppose you.” Sophronius replied, “O Leader of the Faithful, I am not crying over the loss of power or the kingdom. I weep, yes, I shed tears because seeing your compassion and justice has convinced me that your rule will endure for a long time, climbing to greater heights and not breaking, for the rule of oppression is short-lived, while the reign of justice can last until the Day of Judgment.”

Conclusion

Dear readers, the people of Islam and the Christian community listened silently to Sophronius’s words of wisdom. The silence of Ameer-ul-Momineen Hazrat Umar (RA) gave this conversation the stamp of wisdom. Today, we must reflect on why Jerusalem is in its current state and why the world stands on the edge of a burning abyss. Let us resolve to fill our nuclear power state with justice and benevolence, take practical steps forward, and rid our beloved homeland of those who trade faith for worldly gains. Let us heed Patriarch Sophronius’s advice and make Hazrat Umar Farooq’s (RA) reforms the crown jewel of Pakistan’s governance. Long live Pakistan!
